A Global Hub for Inuit Art Avoids Aesthetic Literalism

Qaumajuq, the Inuit art center at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, houses the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world. Architect Michael Maltzan designed the center bearing in mind the way that "space might communicate greater levels of continuity and endlessness.” Informed by a 2013 trip to Nunavut, during which Maltzan visited Pangnirtung, Kinngait, and Iqaluit, as well as by an advisory circle of Indigenous artists and educators, the design is "based on field research and a sophisticated curatorial approach."
