A green space near downtown Ottawa is being renamed to honour late Kinngait artist Annie Pootoogook. The park, formerly known as Sandy Hill Park, is located near the Nunavut Sivuniksavut building in an area with a strong Inuit presence. A Carleton University employee named Stéphanie Plante has been campaigning for the name change since 2019, obtaining permission from Pootoogook's family members to proceed with the change. Pootoogook won the Sobey Art Award in 2006, and is well-known for her evocative drawings depicting life in the North. Plante says that “we need to remember Annie as the absolutely special person that she was."
