Silas Aittauq lived on the land as a hunter and trapper before settling in Baker Lake where he started to carve in 1960. At that time, he used tools such as an axe, file and sandpaper to create his sculptures. He most enjoys working with stone and often carves abstracted compositional forms of animals and people.

Aittauq is married to Baker Lake artist Peggy Qablunaaq Aittauq, daughter of the late Jessie Oonark.
