Bio:
Napachie Pootoogook was a Canadian Inuit artist born on June 26, 1938 at the Sarruq Island camp, Qikiqtaaluk region, Nunavut. Pootoogook is the only daughter of acclaimed artist Pitseolak Ashoona. Her father, Ashoona, died when Pootoogook was six or seven years old. After his death, Pootoogook, along with her mother and five brothers, lived a traditional nomadic Inuit lifestyle and survived with the support of their community.
Pootoogook began her artistic practice in her early twenties with her mother’s encouragement. She quickly developed her own unique style and viewpoint. Pootoogook primarily focused on drawings and prints, experimenting with lithographs and figure drawing later in her career. Her early works depicted traditional Inuit spirituality and mythology. Most of her works were done using acrylic, pens, and coloured pencils.
In mid–1950s, Pootoogook entered into an arranged marriage with Eegyvudluk Pootoogook, an Inuit printmaker and carver. They were married in Kaiktuua, Nunavut, later moving to Cape Dorset, where they lived for most of their marriage. They had eleven children together, several of whom died young. Their daughter, Annie Pootoogook, became an important contemporary Inuit artist known for her prints and drawings.
In 1976, Pootoogook participated in the acrylic painting and drawing workshops at the West Baffin Co-operative (now known as the Kinngait Co-operative) in Cape Dorset. This promoted a change in her artistic style as she became interested in landscapes and Western notions of spatial composition. In the following years, Pootoogook’s works became more colourful; her focus shifted towards recording traditional Inuit life, clothing, hairstyles, tools, community history, and women’s experiences and the intimacies of domestic life. Later pieces illustrated darker aspects of Inuit life, including topics like forced marriage, alcohol abuse, spousal abuse, and starvation. She also produced a series of autobiographical drawings.
During her lifetime, Pootoogook created over 5000 drawings. Her works were included in over eighty exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Israel, Italy, Belgium and France. Her prints have been included in almost every Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection since the 1960s until the early 2000s.
Pootoogook was also a talented throat singer. The 1993 documentary “Quanak & Napachie” documented Pootoogook’s throat singing and her performance at the Canada Day celebration in Ottawa. Her throat singing was also featured in the film “Glory & Honour.”
Pootoogook died of cancer in 2002 in Cape Dorset at the age of 64. Her works are part of collections at the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto, Winnipeg Art Gallery, National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria in British Columbia, Canada.
