Bio:

Annie Pootoogook was born on May 11, 1969 in Kinngait, Nunavut.

Pootoogook was a member of an extraordinary artistic family: her father, Eegyvudluk Pootoogook, was a talented carver and a printmaker; her mother, Napachie Pootoogook, and grandmother, Pitseolak Ashoona, were both well-known and highly respected graphic artists.

Pootoogook began to draw in 1997. She worked at home and at the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative in Kinngait. In 2001, she left the Studio to work on her own. She was extremely prolific between 2001 and 2007.

Pootoogook’s pen and coloured pencil drawings illustrate details of the everyday life of women, the hardships faced by Northern communities, and the impact of technology on traditional Inuit life. With her work, she also expressed her personal experiences and emotions, including intimate interior scenes, domestic abuse, violence and alcoholism.

Pootoogook’s art has been included in several commercial exhibitions since 2002. Her first solo exhibition was held at the Feheley Art Gallery in 2003, followed by a major solo exhibition at the Power Plant in Toronto in 2006. Pootoogook spent the summer of 2006 in Dufftown, Scotland, where she was an artist-in-residence at the Glenfiddich Distillery’s “Spirit off Creativity” program. In the fall of that same year, Pootoogook won the prestigious Sobey Arts Award.

Over the next decade, Pootoogook continued to exhibit in major art shows across North America and Europe, including the Biennale de Montreal, Art Basel, and Documenta 12 in Kassel, Germany. Her drawings are held by the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, and several other notable institutions. Pootoogook was the subject of the documentary film “Annie Pootoogook” by Marcia Connolly, premiered at the Reel Artists Film Festival in Toronto in 2006.
