Bio:
Jerry Whitehead is a Cree Canadian artist born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan in 1957. An early interest in drawing was encouraged by his family. Whitehead used a wide variety of found media for his work, from wood ash to the lead from the bullets his father used for hunting. His style and signature use of bright colours was influenced by his family, who created beadwork, moccasins, mukluks, and braided colourful rugs. Further inspiration came from traditional powwow dance.
Whitehead obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Indian Arts from the University of Regina in 1983, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia School of Art and Design in Halifax in 1987. Upon completing his formal training, Whitehead began exhibiting across Canada.
In 2010, he coordinated the 7,600 square foot mural “Through the Eye of the Raven,” the largest Aboriginal mural in Western Canada.
Whitehead currently resides in East Vancouver, BC, where he continues to work as a full-time artist. His art is held in collections across Canada, including the collection of the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Arts Board and Peace Hills Trust in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
